Crete is the largest of Greece's many islands. It is an island of myths and legend. It was on Crete that Minotaur was locked in the labyrinth and Daedalus and Icarus made their fateful escape on home made wings!
Parts of Crete's amazing history can still be seen today in the ruins of Knossos and Phaistos or the Venetian castle in Rethymnon.
The main tourist resorts on Crete are found along the north coast, where the spectacular beaches offer water sports, excellent nightlife and lots of other attractions. Sun worshippers share some of these beaches with rare loggerhead turtles, which clamber onto the beach under cover of darkness to lay their eggs in the warm, soft sands.
Inland, Crete is known for its mountainous interior, with rugged peaks and dramatic gorges. The most famous of these is the amazing Samaria Gorge. The gorge is in a national park that is popular with day trippers. If you are feeling energetic, the four hour hike down the gorge is one of Crete's most fascinating experiences.
Aghios Nikolaos have chic cafes and elegant boutique shops together with vibrant nightlife and great beaches.
Chania is towards the east of Crete. This area is full of traditional Greek charm and is ideal for couples and families alike. Nightlife is low key and there are plenty of tavernas and bars
Laid back Elounda has a relaxed feel and low-key nightlife in a quiet authentic Greek setting.
Gouves is the resort on Crete to head for if you are looking to get away from it all. There is a good beach which is safe for families. Night life is relaxed with a good choice of bars.
Hersonissos is one of Crete's liveliest resorts and has a great choice of bars, nightclubs and watersports and well as a waterpark. Hersonissos is a great choice for families and couples
Malia, Crete is the place to be in summer if you like great nightlife. It's loud and brash and not for the fainthearted. A great beach and good watersports.
Rethymnon has a quaint harbour with a great selection of open-air restaurants and tavernas. It's a friendly place with an Old Town and even a wine festival in July. It's perfect for a relaxing holiday.
Stalis has a great sandy beach and is a fast growing Crete resort offering a good range of things to do with a laid back atmosphere.
