Thassos

The emerald green island of Thassos has fabulous sandy beaches and scenery that is similar to Corfu or Skiathos, but there are far fewer visitors.   Thassos Town is a bustling port, which also makes a good living from tourism and it makes a good base to explore all that Thassos has to offer. The lively capital has plenty of interesting shops and a good choice of tavernas, restaurants and music bars. Although there is a sandy town beach, most people choose to head for the superb east coast beaches which are easy to get to on the local bus or the pleasure boats which leave regularly from the modern cafe lined harbour.   The islands second largest resort is Limenaria in the south west. It is a lively village with several restaurants and bars, and even a couple of discos. A narrow sandy beach runs the length of the village, backed by raised taverna terraces, ending down at the small harbour with its colourful fishing boats.   A former fishing village, Potos has now grown into a bustling pretty resort although it still has its traditional Greek charm. Just 4km from Limenaria, it offers a good beach with a few tavernas and bars along the old harbour front.   There are more good beaches to be found on Thassos at Pefkari, Psili Ammos and Tripiti, whilst other places well worth visiting in the south of Thassos include Archangelos Monastery and the pretty fishing villages of Maries and Aliki.   Thassos is a little jewel of a Greek island, which is off the main tourist track. We suggest you give Thassos a go. We don't think that you will be disappointed.   Note - Thassos does not have its own airport. You fly into Kavala and if you are on a package holiday you are escorted to the port of Keramoti for a short 25 minute ferry crossing to Thassos Town. The transfer time from Thassos Town to Limenaria is 1 hour and the transfer time from Thassos Town to Potos is 1 hour 30 minutes. Depending on your flight times there may be a short wait for the ferry to Thassos.
