Lesbos or Lesvos as this Greek island is sometimes known is the third largest of all the Greek islands and it lies just off the coast of Turkey in the blue waters of the North Aegean Sea.
Lesbos is an island away from the masses where holiday pleasures are simple, where there are hidden footpaths past traditional olive presses, water mills and stone bridges. There are hidden villages, secluded bays and lovely beaches.
The landscape in Lesbos is unique. There are thick forests and vast salt pans and wetlands which provide fertile feeding grounds for flocks of flamingoes and migrating birds. If you are a bird watch then Lesbos is a good place to be. Also, Lesbos is great for walking as there are many gentle walks along cobbled mule tracks, country trails and forest paths where you can glimpse ancient castles, ruined temples, monastries and small mountain chapels along the way.
The capital of Lesbos is Mytilene, where the airport is, and also where there is a striking castle which is one of the largest in the Mediterrean. Lesbos also has natural thermal springs which offer a Turkish style bathing. There are also spring waters around the Gulf of Kallini which are some of the hottest in Europe. Ouzo is one of Lesbos' top exports. It is drunk widely in all of the islands tavernas.

Molyvos
The pretty village of Molyvos or Mithymna lies just over 60 kilometres from the capital of Mytilene on the north coast of Lesvos. Red roofed stone houses tumble down cobblestone lanes to the tiny fishing harbour where traditional tavernas and cafes line the waterfront. On top of the hill the ruins of the splendid Genoese castle look out over the Aegean Sea to the Turkish mainland. The long stretch of pebble beach offers some watersports with a wider choice of sand and shingle beaches nearby.

Petra
Stretched along a wide stretch of sandy beach with good swimming and watersports, the cahrming village of Petra lies close to Molyvos on the north coast of Lesbos. Perched on top of a high rock in the centre of Petra, the chapel of glykofilousa dominates this holiday resort. Caiques sail from the harbour to the nearby island of St George and around the waterfront and cobblestone streets there are small galleries, gift shops, tavernas, cafes and a small number of nightclubs.

Kalloni
The beach resort of Skala Kalloni lies three kilometres south of the main market town of Kalloni at the centre of the island. Delicious fresh sardines from the Gulf of Kalloni are said to be some of the best in Greece and are served in the many restaurants and tavernas that line the beach and village square.
