Crete is the largest of Greece's many islands. It is an island of myths and legend. It was on Crete that Minotaur was locked in the labyrinth and Daedalus and Icarus made their fateful escape on home made wings!
Parts of Crete's amazing history can still be seen today in the ruins of Knossos and Phaistos or the Venetian castle in Rethymnon.
The main tourist resorts on Crete are found along the north coast, where the spectacular beaches offer water sports, excellent nightlife and lots of other attractions. Sun worshippers share some of these beaches with rare loggerhead turtles, which clamber onto the beach under cover of darkness to lay their eggs in the warm, soft sands.
Inland, Crete is known for its mountainous interior, with rugged peaks and dramatic gorges. The most famous of these is the amazing Samaria Gorge. The gorge is in a national park that is popular with day trippers. If you are feeling energetic, the four hour hike down the gorge is one of Crete's most fascinating experiences.
